On December 13, Professor Wang Zuankai, Associate Vice President of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Chair Professor of Mechanical Engineering, was invited to visit and deliver an academic lecture titled “Field Matching Theory and Frontier Applications” at the “Chance Encounter” Biweekly Tea Talk – Youth Development Salon Series, hosted by the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering. Attendees included President Xuan Fuzhen, Bai Zhishan (Party Secretary of the School of Mechanical and Power Engineering), Jia Yunfei (Deputy Director of the Institute of Science and Technology Development), Lian Cheng (Deputy Dean of the School of Chemistry), along with several young faculty members and graduate students. In his lecture, Professor Wang systematically elaborated on the cross-scale, multi-physics (mechanical, thermal, electrical, etc.) coupling problems essential for efficient energy conversion within the framework of field matching theory. Drawing on his own research journey, Wang introduced his methodology of achieving efficient conversion of fluid kinetic energy, surface energy, and thermal energy by regulating the chemical properties and topological structures of surfaces. He also discussed the latest application prospects of this theory in fields such as catalysis, microfluidics, and microelectronics.
During the discussion session, participating scholars, experts, and graduate students engaged in in-depth discussions on topics including energy conversion efficiency optimization, fluid transport mechanisms, and prospects for microelectronic applications. Drawing from his own research experience, Professor Wang offered valuable advice to graduate students, encouraging them to pursue innovation, focus on practical problems, and strive to translate research results into real-world applications. President Xuan Fuzhen remarked that the university will further support interdisciplinary research and high-level academic exchanges, build more collaboration platforms, and contribute to technological innovation. He encouraged young faculty members and graduate students to actively integrate into the international academic frontier with a global perspective, explore the intersection of academic research and practical applications, and build bridges between fundamental research and real-world implementation, thereby contributing wisdom and strength to addressing major national needs and societal challenges.
